The Commission on Constitutional Reform of the Illinois Student Senate has put forth a proposed Constitution. In order for this Constitution to appear on the Fall 2016 Student Referendum, the commission must obtain the required number of signatures, which is equal to 5% of the student body. Please consider signing the petition to get the Constitution on the referendum. Note that by signing this petition you are not necessarily indicating your support for the Constitution, but you are indicating your support for it to be voted on by the entire student body.
The Constitution and associated Transition Document may be viewed here
Major changes between the proposed Constitution and the current Constitution include, but are not limited to:
- The Student Body President and Student Body Vice President will be popularly elected by the students of the campus in the annual Spring Student Elections and Referendum.
- The Student Senate will have the flexibility to include representative seats from constituencies other than academic colleges. This will not have any impact on representation in the Campus Senate.
- The Student Court will be organized from scratch as a co-equal branch of the student government.
- The Government as a whole will be better structured to provide input to campus policies and meaningful programming.
